Australian Olympic representative Courtney Atkinson and Netherlands Olympian Rachel Klamer staged the closest ever finish at the 2012 Penrith Nepean Triathlon.
Atkinson chased down Klamer in the final 100 metres and seemingly crossed the line together. The timing records revealing Atkinson crossed the line less than a second in front.
The staggered start between the professional male and female waves in the past few years has made for some exciting finishes. Klamer had a 10 minute 53 second head start on Atkinson from the start of the swim. This time is recalculated each year based on the previous years result.
In near perfect conditions Atkinson also took out the current course record in a time of 1:27:44 with over 800 competitors coming in behind him.
