Course remains fixed
The race format began to be locked into place at Tench Reserve with a mostly triangular 1km swim in the Nepean river followed a loop course of a 37km cycle to the country town of Wallacia. The run leg remained a tough and hilly 12km course but avoided what some thought was an unnecessarily steep dirt track up the Blue Mountains escarpment.
Champions were Annette Dwyer, the first dual title holder, while in the men’s a flamboyant triathlete, Nigel Barber took the title. Nigel went on to work for a major Triathlon magazine of the time.
