Bike Racks Introduced

This era saw the ‘toaster’ bike racks become part of the race’s infrastructure. The infamous  heartbreak hill (a 1km dirt fire trail which went straight up the blue mountains escarpment) was taken out of the run course due safety concerns.

Race champions for 1985 were Stu McNeil and Annette Dwyer. Stu still has the Nepean Triathlon record for the oldest ever champion (he was in his late 30’s when he won). A school teacher who was always young at heart, he often picked up triathlon wins (and prize money) against those almost half his age for the next couple of seasons.

Annette was and is still an outstanding runner who went onto to win back to back Nepean titles (1985-86). She then focused on her running competing in the Australian track 3K & 10k titles as well as picking up numerous wins and places on the road circuit both in Australia and the USA. Annette stayed quite involved with multi sports placing 4th in her age in the world duathlon titles in 2005.
