1988 Nepean Triathlon Louise Bonham and Bernard Hinault

Louise Bonham Takes Her First Title

Another Ironman star to make her mark on the Nepean Triathlon was Louise Bonham who took the 1988 women’s title. Louise would go on to become one of Australia’s most accomplished triathletes, with four Aussie Ironman wins as well as placing in the top ten in the Hawaii Ironman. Louise would end her career abruptly after being hit by a car while training in Canada. You can still catch Louise at numerous triathlon and sporting events and through her association with Polar.

The men’s champion in 1988 was one of the most charismatic characters of the sport, Spot Anderson. Spot went onto dominate triathlon over the next couple of years. Spot was always one to have a go and went onto compete in the Uncle Toby’s Surf Ironman series. Spot has built a successful coaching business and is still actively involved in triathlon and swimming both as a competitor and coach.

Lastly, 5-time Tour de France champion, Frenchman Bernard Hinault (pictured above) made a surprise  appearance at the event in 1988.
